Kingston College students take on Princess Alice Hospice’s 36-hour sustainability challenge!
Princess Alice Hospice shops are a familiar sight on high streets in the London Boroughs of Kingston and Richmond and large parts of Surrey. Kingston’s busy shopping district is home to three and all of them are particularly popular with the town’s large student population.
Back in February, the Hospice began working with Kingston College on a project to promote sustainable fashion and the possibilities of upcycling pre-loved items from its shops. Hospice colleagues from the Retail, Volunteering and Community Involvement teams visited the College to introduce the project to BTEC level 3 Fashion, Textiles & Costume students, aged 16-18 years. Shortly afterwards, students were given clothing donated to the Hospice to create designs and upcycled garments from, based on themes such as ‘Jewel’ and ‘Acquatic’.
Anita from Kingston College, said: “A huge thank you to the Princess Alice Hospice team for providing students with the opportunity to work to industry expectations and deadlines. This experience has helped them develop key employability skills and gain valuable insight into specialist pathways within the textile industry, including styling, textile applications, and visual merchandising.
‘’The Princess Alice Hospice team was incredibly supportive in sharing their knowledge with students. They helped raise awareness of sustainable practices, the impact on the environment and ecosystems, and the important role the charity plays in addressing these issues. Their input has encouraged students to consider how they can minimise environmental impact while continuing to enjoy fashion through creativity and the revitalisation of garments. The BTEC level 3 Fashion, Textiles & Costume students had so much fun with this 36 hour challenge!’’
You can view the displays in our Kingston shops over the next couple of weeks – these images are from our store on Clarence Street:
