Dr Emily Sills, Medical Director and Medical Lead for Research

Dr Emily Sills is Medical Director and the Medical Lead for Research at Princess Alice Hospice. Emily has worked in palliative care for 20 years and as a Consultant for 13 years, always with an interest in research. When working at Woking Hospice Emily helped set up their research group and developed the policies and procedures required to enable them to take part in small studies. Emily started working with Shannon in 2021 and they have worked together on the Princess Alice Hospice research strategy. Emily believes that it is vital that hospices continue to play a role in research, to support the development of services and contribute towards the evidence base. Emily’s specialist interests are Motor Neurone Disease, frailty and care for patients as they transition from paediatric to adult services.

Alice Firth, Research Lead

Alice Firth is the Research Lead at Princess Alice Hospice. Alice is responsible for the organisational research strategy and oversees the development and management of internal research projects.

Alice has just finished her PhD in Palliative Care at Kings College, London.

Jane Berg, Director - Skills, Knowledge and Research

Jane Berg Jane is a nurse by background and has worked predominantly in the community first as a District Nurse, then a Clinical Nurse Specialist. She completed her Masters Degree at Birmingham University and moved into education working at Bangor University as a Lecturer. Jane has a particular interest in supporting staff in care homes to provide high-quality end of life care.

We welcome research collaborations and partnerships with external researchers to undertake well designed and appropriate research.

All potential research projects will be considered by the hospice research committee which meets quarterly in March, June, September and December. Please contact us for the exact dates should you wish to make an application.

Please fill in the research application form and ensure all applications are submitted to Alice Firth, the Hospice’s research lead, at least two weeks before the research committee meetings. You will be informed of the research committee’s decision within two weeks of the meeting.

Alain Bakas

We will never be able to thank the team at Princess Alice Hospice enough for the love, care, dignity, and compassion they showed our papa and our whole family. They cared for my papa for a month, and then welcomed him back again for his final 8 days before he passed on 3rd April 2026. Every single member of staff became like family to us during the hardest time of our lives. Their kindness, patience, support, and genuine compassion will stay in our hearts and minds forever. They not only cared for our papa with dignity and respect, but they also supported all of us emotionally every step of the way. We are so grateful for everything they did for our papa and for the comfort they brought him in his final days. Thank you again to the entire team for the incredible work you do every day. You are truly special people, and we will never forget you.

My Mum was there for 3 weeks before she passed away in Nov . The staff and level of care was amazing, she was loved by the staff. They couldn't of done more for her. Myself and my sister were also supported. We donated a large memorial feather in our Mums memory. It's such a shame that most if their funding comes from donations.

The call out night service team of Princess Alice were amazing with my Granny in her last few days. She was able to stay in her own home and have their amazing team look after her when we called them. I would like to especially say a big thank you to Camilla who was always so cheerful, professional and put us at ease when we really needed it. She would remember our family members names despite being called out to a number of houses every evening and was always a reassuring voice when she answered the phone. She made a real difference to my Granny’s end of life and I wouldn’t have wanted her to be under any other care. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts.
