Getting Greener
At the Hospice, caring for our community also means caring for our environment. Over the past few years, we’ve been working hard to reduce our environmental impact, cut carbon emissions and operate more sustainably across all parts of the organisation.
By introducing the Energy Savings Opportunity Scheme (ESOS), we were able to reduce our energy consumption by 890,000 kWh between 2019-2020 and 2022-23.
In 2023 we installed solar panels at the Hospice, which continue to contribute clean, renewable energy. In 2024/25 they generated 49,500 kWh, which accounted for around 6% of our total electricity usage.
We’re supporting greener transport by integrating electric vehicles into our existing fleet. We currently operate two electric vehicles (EVs) and will soon be adding a third. To support this, we have three EV charging stations on-site for use by our Hospice EVs, as well as by colleagues and visitors.
We’ve also been working to improve energy efficiency across our buildings. From April, the Hospice will be fully LED lit, and we have ambitions to extend LED lighting across our shops in the community, too.
100% of the electricity used across the Hospice, and in all our High Street shops is now sourced from renewable energy, including wind, solar and hydroelectric power. This is a major step in reducing our carbon footprint and making sure our operations are powered by cleaner, greener energy.
We’re also nearing the end of a phased replacement of our electric heating and cooling systems across the Hospice. The new equipment is far more efficient and will be fully controlled through a building management system to maximise energy efficiency. This upgrade will also reduce our demand for gas, as we will be relying far less on our gas fuelled central heating system.
These initiatives are important steps in our ongoing commitment to reducing our environmental footprint and supporting a greener future for our own Hospice community and for the wider community around us.
