Students from local schools and colleges enjoyed a great week of learning at the Hospice last week. They were here to undertake the Compassionate Care at End of Life course run by our Education and Research team.

The learning was delivered in a fun and supportive environment (with a great array of snacks and sweets thrown in, too!) and it was clear from the feedback that the young people found their time incredibly worthwhile:

What did you find most interesting/informative about the course?
The course gave me an insight into the perspective of not only the healthcare workers but the patients who are on the receiving end of healthcare. This knowledge was hugely valuable for me and shaped my actions and views on how to provide compassionate, genuine care.

I found talking to healthcare professionals very useful as it allowed me to consider more deeply if I could every imagine myself performing a similar role.

I enjoyed the activities that we did with other volunteers as if they were ones in need of care. This was a very practical course and it allows me to speak to many people who help out and how they help out.

how intricate the art of communication is especially when talking about sensitive situations or to people in care in a way that allows you to be a pillar of support they can trust and rely on but also one they enjoy speaking with.

How has the course influenced your plans for your future career or studies?

The course has bolstered my decisions on working towards my dreams to do medicine.

I think that it has reinstated my desire to go into a setting where there is a focus on helping others, as well as perhaps a setting where I can get to know the patients more.

I am looking to get into some sort of medicine and parts of the course allowed me to see a branch of healthcare which requires lots of effort time and patience but it also allowed me to see some aspects of general practise like the blood pressure tests and plotting graphs.

It’s provided me with better insight and encouraged me to want to help people

It has helped me understand palliative care in further depth, allowing me to cement my decision of a healthcare related career.

We wish all our young people good luck as they progress in medicine, health or social care careers.
