Are you thinking about volunteering, but can’t decide which role is best for you?

Do you like meeting people? Are you a good listener? Maybe you’re a fantastic organiser or someone who loves to get stuck into admin? We’ve got volunteering opportunities for everyone. Do you have time to spare? Then you could volunteer with us. Whether you can volunteer for a couple of days each week, month or year we have a role to suit you. We need people with a wide variety of skills and experience and embrace diversity, offering a welcoming and inclusive environment for all our volunteers.

Our ‘Introduction to Volunteering’ sessions run regularly, for approximately one hour, and provide the opportunity for you to meet the volunteer team and find out more about volunteering opportunities.

Big Help Out – Gardening Challenge - Event

Join us as part of the Big Help Out to help out in our gardens on Saturday 8 June!

Our beautiful gardens are an oasis of calm and tranquillity and an integral part of what makes the Hospice environment so special. This outdoor retreat is where patients and families go to relax, appreciate the beauty and balm of nature, listen to the birdsong and share precious moments together in the fresh air. Cultivating this beautiful space depends on the consistent care and attention provided by a strong team of dedicated garden volunteers.

We’re looking for volunteers who can support us for a couple of hours to do a number of tasks, including

  • painting furniture
  • moving and laying stones
  • general tidying up around the gardens

Ward Tea and Coffee Volunteer

Saturday or Sunday 2.15pm – 3.30pm
Esher, Surrey

Care often starts with the smallest of acts…like the offer of a warm cup of tea or coffee.

We know that these small acts can provide comfort to our patients and a home away from home during difficult times.

We’re looking for more Ward Tea and Coffee Volunteers who can help us continue this important service. You’ll be friendly, kind, and polite. You’ll enjoy working as part of a team and using your communication skills to meet the needs of others.

Full training and support provided to support you with your voluntary journey at Princess Alice Hospice. We are looking for volunteers to cover Saturday and/or Sunday weekly shifts 2.15 – 3.30pm.

Shop Servicing Assistant Volunteer

one day shift per week 8.30am-4.30pm Monday to Saturday
Princess Alice Hospice Retail Hub in Hersham

Our hub in Hersham is at the heart of our retail operations. Donations are centrally stored at the hub and then distributed to our 40+ shops across our care community.

We are looking for volunteers to assist our van drivers (you’ll be not driving) in collecting and delivering donations to various shops across our care community.  If you would enjoy being out on the road with our van drivers, travelling between shops, and transporting donated goods, then this could be the role for you!

You will be able to commit to one shift per week which is a full day with relevant breaks. You’ll be comfortable with moving and handling bulky items, friendly and approachable.

Donation Sorter

Can you spot the hidden treasures amongst the donated items?

Our hub in Hersham is at the heart of our retail operations. Donations are centrally stored at the hub and then distributed to our 40+ shops across our care area. We are looking for volunteers to assist us in sorting textiles, books, CDs/DVDs, electricals and bric-a-brac,  and keeping the hub running smoothly on a day-to-day basis.

You’ll be friendly, have excellent organisation skills and attention to detail. Full training and guidance will be provided to support you with your volunteering journey at Princess Alice Hospice.

Ward Support Volunteer

4.30pm to 8.30pm, once a week for six months
Princess Alice Hospice, Esher

Are you thinking of pursuing a career in healthcare and want to gain experience in the field? Would you like to gain some hands-on experience working with patients? Do you want to know what it’s like to work on a ward with multi-disciplinary teams? Are you curious to see compassionate care in action?

If yes to all of the above (and you are aged between 17-19 years by September 2024), this could be the programme for you! In exchange for a few hours every week, we can help support your career ambitions by providing you with meaningful and valuable experience volunteering directly with patients on our In-Patient Unit (IPU). Our Ward Support Volunteers get amazing opportunities on every shift to care for patients and support our nurses and healthcare assistants.

Over the course of this 6 month programme, you will interact with patients and staff on a weekly basis gaining invaluable insights into compassionate healthcare and expanding your skill set, knowledge, and confidence. You’ll also meet other Ward Support Volunteers with similar interests to you. At the end of the programme, we recognise and celebrate your volunteering journey with a certificate of your achievement.

You must be able to commit to volunteering one day every week, from 8 September 2024 for six months with minimal absence. The training day will be Saturday 7 September 2024

Compassionate Neighbour

1-2 hours a week
Community based, within care area of Princess Alice Hospice, Esher

Be the difference on your doorstep.
Compassionate Neighbours are trained volunteers offering friendship, support and listening ear to people living in their local community, sometimes with serious, long-term or terminal illness who often struggle with loneliness.

By popping round for a cup of tea or a friendly chat once a week you can make a world of difference. You will be a good listener, kind and have a genuine interest in other people.

As a Compassionate Neighbour Volunteer you’ll not only gain new skills, confidence, and social networks; you’ll be making a difference in your local community.

Full training and support is provided. Training for our next intake will be held at the Hospice on the following dates:
Saturdays 22 & 29 June 2024, 9.30am – 3.30pm

If you are unable to attend those, we have scheduled training in September as well:
Tuesday 17 September & Friday 20 September 2024,  9.30am – 3.30pm

Bereavement Walk and Talk Volunteer

2-3 hours a month
Denbies or Horton Country park

Getting the right support at the right time can make the world of difference as people try to navigate their way through their grief. Our Walk and Talk Volunteers offer an invaluable outlet for bereaved people to come together and enjoy the benefits of being out in nature and accessing peer support from others who are also grieving.

As a Bereavement Walk and Talk Volunteer you’ll facilitate the walk, ensuring there are enough volunteers, welcoming newcomers and registering everyone, making introductions and ensuring that the walk goes smoothly. The walks currently take place in Bushy Park, Richmond, Painshill and Claremont Landscape Gardens. We are now looking for volunteers as we establish new walks in Denbies and Horton Country Park .

The Denbies Walk will be held the first Monday of each month at 10.15 for a 10.30 start and will take approx 1 hour. Horton Country Park – Day/time tbc.

You will be required to attend a Training Day on Monday 1 July 10am – 3pm. Closing date for applications – 20 June.

Bereavement Support Volunteer

Flexible commitment of around 3 hours per week
Princess Alice Hospice, Esher

Getting the right support at the right time can make a world of difference as people try to navigate their way through their grief.

In the challenging times that follow the death of a patient, we support families, friends and relatives as they cope with their loss. Providing volunteers who will spend time with those who are grieving is an invaluable service that we feel privileged to offer to our community.  This support is given in many ways, via face to face meetings (usually in the hospice or occasionally home visits) or by telephone or video call (e.g. Zoom). As a Bereavement Support Volunteer, you will have regular one to one support sessions with individual clients, keep an online record of those sessions and write a closing summary.

You will be required to complete a 12-week in-house training programme starting on Monday 16 September and then held every Monday for approx 9.30am-4pm.

We are encouraging early applications with a deadline of 16 June 2024

Our Shop Volunteers are an important part of the work we do at Princess Alice Hospice. On over 40 high streets, they help our shops turn takings directly into outstanding care.

Volunteering in one of our shops not only makes a difference to those we care for, it will make a difference to your life too. In our vibrant, sociable shops you will find new friends, colleagues, whilst gaining a wealth of valuable experience and also bagging a bargain for yourself!

If you’re comfortable interacting with the public, enjoy working as part of a team, and have an eye for tidiness and detail, we’d love to hear from you.

Events Assistant Volunteer

Flexible

As an Events Assistant volunteer you will provide support at our events taking place throughout the year. These range from sporting events, summer fetes, bridge drives, open gardens, luncheons etc. The role is varied and encompasses a number of different duties depending on the event; from car park marshalling at our busier events, to help setting up and manning a stall at our fete.

Community Fundraiser Volunteer

3-5 hours per month
In your local area with monthly trips to the Hospice

As a Community Fundraiser Volunteer, you will commit to a few hours a month in your local area to assist with our tin collection. This will involve visiting various shops, pubs and cafes on your local high street to collect the full tins and replace them with new ones at least every 3 months. You can also get involved in various fundraising events or help distribute posters and leaflets to your local Princess Alice Hospice Shops. Your role will be crucial in supporting our fundraising team.

We are particularly interested to hear from potential volunteers who can cover one of these areas: Addlestone, Ashtead, Barnes, Brentford, Chertsey, Chessington, Cobham, Dorking, Effingham, Epsom, Hampton Court, Kingston Upon Thames, Leatherhead, Shepperton, Sunbury, Sutton, Teddington, Twickenham West/East Horsley and Worcester Park

E-commerce Assistant Volunteer

3 - 4hrs per week
Princess Alice Hospice Retail Hub, Hersham

The online marketplace is an important avenue for fundraising and supplements the great contribution to Hospice funds. The items that we prepare for online selling need to be researched, then photographed, priced and listed on the right platforms. If you enjoy online shopping, have a good eye for detail and a flair for photography then this could be the perfect role for you! 

Ideally, you will be able to commit to a regular half day per week. The Hub is open Monday – Saturday from 8:30am – 4:30pm.

You’ll be comfortable using online marketplace platforms (such as Ebay), confident writing descriptions and taking product photos. By volunteering as an E-commerce Assistant Volunteer, you’ll not only gain new skills, knowledge, and social networks; you’ll be making a difference in your local community.
