  • Man Shed Session Leader Read more

Hours: 4 hours a week (1 session) Location: Esher, Surrey

    About the role

Our Man Shed reaches out to the men who are not currently accessing our services. This may be a patient struggling to come to terms with their diagnosis, a bereaved man lost without his ‘other half’ or a man caring for his partner. The Man Shed gives these men, as well as bereaved women and young people, a space to learn or practice a practical skill, such as woodwork, with the aim that this will provide them with a support network and may lead them to access other Hospice services.

We are looking for volunteers to help lead sessions within the Man Shed:

    • To teach, help and encourage users to use the Shed effectively
    • To supervise the safe use of equipment and ensure health and safety is maintained at all times
    • To document ideas for projects to do in the Shed
    •  To help users with their own ideas
    • To record attendance

Ideally you can commit to at least 4 hours per week.

  • Hospice Neighbours Read more

    Location: In the community

    About the role

    • Could you offer support to someone nearing the end of their life?
    • Could you give their carer a much needed break?
    • Do you have a few hours to spare each week?

If you have answered yes to all these questions then you may be the person we are looking for to join us as a Hospice Neighbour.

We are looking for volunteers throughout our catchment area which extends from Staines to Hounslow, Richmond, Kingston, Walton and Dorking.  Volunteers must be able to commit to a minimum of four hours a week offering emotional and practical support to our patients and their carers.

These are some of the ways our volunteers support our patients.

    • Befriending – perhaps reminiscing with them about the past, talking about their worries and of course having a joke or two!
    • Helping around the house – making a sandwich, hanging the washing out, collecting a prescription or preparing a shopping list
    • Taking the person out for a drive or to appointments and helping with shopping.

Volunteers will be supported with a programme of training and ongoing group supervision from the Princess Alice Hospice Team.

    What our volunteers say…

“Every Saturday morning I visit Kath and Frank and take them out, they look forward to our outings as they have no transport of their own.

“It’s lovely seeing them enjoy short walks as they met as ramblers. They enjoy a pub lunch, as do I, and it’s been fun to discover new places with them. There’s never a pause in the conversation.

“I am a lifelong volunteer and really enjoy supporting others who are less able than myself, enabling them to do things they wouldn’t usually be able to.”

    Julie, Volunteer
