As a Hospice, it is our vision that our communities will have the best care and support before, during and after death. We’ve made it our mission to nurture compassionate communities who can build on the work we do within the Hospice itself. The Ashford Community Allotment is one of the ways that we are doing this, by providing a place and a purpose for people when they may need extra support. There is no commitment and you’re welcome to come along and join in as much or as little as you’d like to.
If you’re dealing with a life-limiting illness yourself or supporting someone who is, or if you’ve been recently bereaved, the Community Allotment could be a good way to meet others in a similar situation, get outdoors and get involved in something new and different. The allotment is open to all ages and genders and neither green fingers nor prior experience of gardening are required! You don’t have to dig, weed, rake or prune – if you’d rather just potter or have a chat, that’s fine.
Allotment volunteer Richard will be running some of the sessions and he’s been working on the Hospice’s allotment alongside his own, clearing it and getting it ready for planting.
“I’ve had my allotment for many years,” he says, “and it’s really good for your mental health. I had a stressful job in the past and it’s been a great place to escape to.” Richard says that visitors to the allotment “will be able to do as much or as little as they want – whether that’s chat, do some strenuous digging, some light weeding or pick and eat some of the produce.”
We have regular volunteer-led Saturday sessions 10am-12noon and Wednesday sessions 1pm – 3pm.

Families and carers drop in sessions – Wednesdays - 23 June 2021
Sessions will be held on Wednesdays:
19 and 26 May; 2, 9, 16, 23 and 30 June; 7 July.
Each session will run from 2pm until 3pm approx.
All sessions will be held online via zoom.

Princess Alice Hospice will be running an eight week programme for families and cares that are looking after someone as they approach the end of their life. The sessions are stand-alone so people can dip in and out of them although we find many people like to attend them all as relationships are made albeit over the Zoom camera.
People who have attended in the past have given positive feedback about the sessions which are interactive and informal.

- This is an 8 week programme – 1 hour each via Zoom on Wednesday afternoons 2.00pm-3.00pm commencing the 19th May
- It is specifically aimed at Families and Carers
- Run by Rosie Noble, Families and Carers’ Lead, Princess Alice Hospice
- Session leaders will all be members of staff from the Wellbeing or therapy services at Princess Alice
- All families and carers are welcome. People are encouraged to contribute to the sessions but no-one is expected to talk unless they are happy and willing to do so. Indeed some people sit and listen – and that’s fine!

Support us this February by holding your own PJ Day; whether you’re learning at home, at school, working remotely or in the office. With many of us currently living in our PJs whilst staying at home during lockdown there really isn’t any excuse to not get involved!
Our aim is to raise awareness of The Princess Alice Hospice at Home service and the care that our nurses provide for patients in their own homes, 365 days of the year. Our nurses and doctors have adapted to ensure that care has continued throughout the pandemic; sometimes via phone or video call but still with many home visits. All you do is wear your pyjamas while doing your job, hobby or sport on any one day – and pay a suggested minimum donation of £2 or ask family and friends to sponsor you.
Organise a PJ Day in February (the official Princess Alice Hospice PJ Day is on 12 February, but you can choose any day and time that suits you) and help raise money and awareness of the work our nurses do so they can continue to care for more people with life limiting illnesses.
You can either make a donation or set up a JustGiving fundraising page via our JustGiving campaign page here. Please ensure you follow the latest government guidelines if participating with friends, family and/or colleagues.

Princess Alice Hospice will be raising funds by selling tea and homemade cake at Trumpeters House. The two-acre garden is on the original site of Richmond Palace. Long lawns stretch from the house to banks of the River Thames. Clipped yews, a box parterre, unusual shrubs and trees and ancient Tudor walls covered with roses and climbers.

A chat about death over coffee and cake might not be everyone’s cup of tea, but it could get people talking about a subject that is still taboo for many. In our Death Cafés we aim to empower communities with the knowledge, skills and confidence to engage with death, dying and loss.
Here’s what one attendee, Sue, had to say about her experience:
“Death is part of life and affects us all, yet it largely remains a taboo subject. Attending the death cafe has given me the chance to discuss and learn from others and consider how I feel about my own wishes for the end of my life and to express those to my family. It is a positive, interesting experience and feels very safe to chat about death which you can’t do anywhere else”.
Please note, this is not a bereavement cafe and is not suitable for anyone who is recently bereaved.

From the stunning mountains of the Lake District to the beautiful open moors of the Northern Pennines – all you need to do is hop on your bike and enjoy the ride!
