Twice a year we invite applications from local 17-19 year olds to our Ward Support Volunteer programme. We were very pleased to welcome our 19th cohort to the Hospice recently.

Students can apply to the Hospice for a space on the programme where they work alongside our clinical staff and find out what it’s like to work in a clinical setting and whether a career in health care is for them.

Ward Support Vols Cohort 19During their first weekend, they spend Saturday with a full day of training and preparation and then shifts start on Sunday.

The following few weeks are spent shadowing health care assistants on our In-Patient Unit which helps them settle into the role.

A huge thanks to the In-Patient Unit team who lead the training, for supporting our aspiring healthcare professionals learn more about themselves and what a career in healthcare might look like for them.

In return for a few hours each week, we hope we can provide enough experience for them to decide if a clinical role is for them. Maybe we’ll see some of them back at the Hospice in the future.
