Countess of Athlone (1883-1981)
Princess Alice had family ties to Esher. She was the last surviving granddaughter of Queen Victoria, as a young child she lived at nearby Claremont and visited Esher village often.
With links to nursing during the Second World War and a personality which reflected the spirit of the Hospice when it was opened in 1985, the original Trustees of the Hospice felt that she would have warmly supported the Hospice. They were most grateful when her daughter, Lady May Abel Smith, gave permission for the Hospice to be named Princess Alice Hospice after her mother.
Princess Alice died at Kensington Palace in 1981, aged 97.
