Meet our team

Cheryl Baker is our Lymphoedema Therapist.

I feel privileged to work here; working as part of a multi-disciplinary team is very beneficial.

Her appointment was possible following your generous response to a fundraising campaign. Cheryl has been a specialist therapist since 2004; her previous career involved working in payroll. Having had enough of this, she sought a role where she could make a difference.

Cheryl said:

‘I decided to retrain in complementary therapy, specialising in massage and reflexology. I utilised these new skills as a volunteer for a number of years at the Butterfly Centre, Epsom Hospital and at a cancer care drop in centre.

‘At the drop in centre, I learnt about lymphoedema. This uncomfortable swelling is a distressing and visible sign of a disease, which otherwise may be hidden, however, with treatment, it can be controlled. I wanted to help patients through this painful stage of their illness so I completed comprehensive training and became a qualified Lymphoedema Therapist.

‘I have been working at the Hospice since the launch of the Lymphoedema service in October 2009; my role is everything I hoped it would be. I work with patients on the ward, with out - patients, and at patients’ homes. Home visits are of benefit to patients’ families. I advise how they can help their loved ones. They also allow treatment of the disease to start as early as possible, which will reduce later complications and the number of times a patient has to come to the Hospice. The treatment allows patients to control this uncomfortable and painful disease and so dramatically improve their quality of life.

‘I feel privileged to work here; working as part of a multi-disciplinary team is very beneficial. Increased knowledge and skills gained from other care professionals means that I can be of greater support to patients, and that is the most important thing.’
