Patient Support Volunteers

Complementary Therapies

Suitably qualified volunteers carry out our Complementary Therapies for in-patients and day patients. This may be aromatherapy or reflexology or other therapies agreed by our Complementary Therapy Co-ordinator.

Day Hospice

The Day Hospice is open five days a week and volunteers assist the nursing staff to look after patients. They help with craft activities, art work and beauty care as well assisting with lunches/refreshments.

Driving

A team of volunteers, co-ordinated by five Transport Officers, drive our patients to our Day Hospice, outpatient and hospital appointments. Drivers use their own cars. Expenses are paid at an agreed rate and parking charges can be reimbursed. Volunteers drivers are not recruited over the age of 70, and existing drivers who attain the age of 70 will be reviewed on an annual basis

Hairdressing/Beauty Care

The hairdressing and manicure services offered are not only a practical service but also give patients a degree of personal attention which is of therapeutic value and may enhance their quality of life.

Patient Feeders

There are occasions when our nursing staff need help with the feeding of our patients. Volunteers with previous nursing experience are invited to apply.

Patient Library

We have a patients’ library of popular books, pictorial albums and a library of CDs/music tapes/talking books for use by all patients and visitors.

Patient Visiting

Working in conjunction with the Hospice Community Team, volunteers visit patients at home to help with shopping or to carry out other errands. They provide company and an opportunity for the regular carer to have a break. Volunteers work in the Hospice for at least six months before applying to join this Team.

P.A.T. Visits

Pet owners, whose animals have successfully completed a “Pets as Therapy” course, bring their dogs to the Hospice to visit our Ward and Day Hospice patients. These visits serve as diversional therapy and give patients an opportunity to communicate with both the visiting dog and the volunteer owner.

Richard "I joined the Hospice as I want to study medicine. I enjoy chatting with the patients - it makes me appreciate what I have"
