Yvonne’s storyYvonne McIntosh, from Ewell, is one of the thousands of patients referred to us from across our catchment area.
The place has a happy and social atmosphere and is full of love and care. ![]() Yvonne lives alone and independence is very important to her. A period of respite allows her to rest and build up reserves so that she can return home and maintain her independence within the limits of her condition. Yvonne shared her experiences with us: ‘I have to be honest and say that following my initial diagnosis and during treatment I was reluctant to be involved with the Hospice movement. I had very little experience but numerous preconceived ideas. ‘My involvement has been very much a personal progression, a sort of stepping stone pathway. I came as a day-patient and this changed my idea of what I thought it would be like, it was bright, full of people chatting, engaging with one another and having fun. My initial fear and anxiety faded. ‘Overtime, my attitude changed, I was then willing to consider coming into the Hospice on the ward for a period of respite. It was a difficult decision as many conflicting thoughts entered my head. I am very independent; I live alone and take pride in maintaining my independence and driving to the Hospice. Once it was explained, that a period of respite was as much about preparing me and building up my reserves so that I could return home, as it was a time for rest, I was keen to come in. ‘Respite has been brilliant, the care has been exemplary, the nurses and doctors are so professional. Their skills and experience centre on palliative care; it is very clear to me that they are carefully selected for their jobs. For me being able to have a bath and relax has been wonderful. At home I am not able to lift myself out of the bath and have to make do with a shower; a bath is a great luxury. ‘By coming on the ward, I am prepared and know what to expect when I come in at the end of my life. I have peace of mind because everyone here knows my needs and my wishes as to how I want to be treated. It is peaceful and calm, however, there is also laughter, the fact that visitors can visit when it is convenient to them, means the place has a social and happy atmosphere and is full of love and care.’ |
