CARING FOR THE PERSON WITH DEMENTIA AT THE END OF LIFE

Caring for someone with dementia offers challenges in the way we manage symptoms experienced as the end of life approaches. This session will support you in offering care aimed at giving comfort and preserving dignity for the individual and their family.

CARE AND COMFORT IN THE LAST 48 HOURS OF LIFE

The last 48 hours of life is often considered to be the ‘active’ dying phase when an individual has a life threatening illness. Offering high quality support and care compliments the work of the Nurses and Doctors to ensure that the individual is able to die with comfort and dignity.

BEREAVEMENT CARE

All Health & Social Care staff

When a person is approaching the end of life or has just died strong emotions are experienced by all involved and these are sometimes difficult to deal with. This session will support health and social care workers to understand the reactions to loss and how to offer support.

ADVANCE CARE PLANNING

All Health & Social Care Staff

In order to provide individualised care at the end of life we first need to understand the preferences and needs of the individual. This session will help you to explore the issues related to discussing their future plans with patients & clients.

CARING FOR OLDER PEOPLE & FAMILIES AT THE END OF LIFE

As the end of life approaches many people need increased support and care from health and social care workers. For many older people the difficulties faces may be more difficult because of multiple health problems and changing social circumstances. This session will give you the opportunity to learn more about caring for the dying older person and their family.

SLEEP DISTURBANCE – IMPACT & SUPPORT

The aim of this session is to gain an understanding of the common causes of sleep disturbance and explore the impact both psychologically and physically.

SPIRITUAL & RELIGIOUS CARE

All Health & Social Care Staff

Attending to the spiritual needs of people is an important part of healthcare practice. All healthcare staff & volunteers need to understand and recognise spiritual needs and how they differ from religious needs. This session will develop active listening skills to enable support to be offered to individuals in a health/social care setting.

SAGE & THYME

Sage & Thyme has been developed as a national initiative to help health and social care workers to support people in distress. By the end of the course you should be able to recognise psychological distress, avoid causing psychological harm, communicate honestly and compassionately and know when you have reached the boundary of your competence.

SYMPTOM MANAGEMENT OF THE LAST 48 HOURS OF LIFE

The last 48 hours of life are often challenging in terms of symptom management. During this session you will have the opportunity to discuss the common symptoms identified in the Liverpool Care Pathway and learn more about their management.

MCKINLEY SYRINGE PUMPS

Trained Nurses only

The introduction of syringe pumps revolutionised the way we administer drugs at the end of life. This session will support staff that are familiar with the principles of Continuous Subcutaneous Infusions and would like to learn about the use of McKinley T34 Pump.

VERIFICATION BY NURSE OF EXPECTED DEATH

Trained Nurses only

A session aimed at nurses who verify expected death as part of their practice. The session will explore professional, legal and practical issues of verification and after death care. On completion of the study session attendees will have the opportunity to complete competencies within their practice setting.
